Kids Birthday Party Ideas - Styling a Bluey Party (2024)

Need some kids birthday party ideas? Bluey is every preschooler’s favourite TV show it seems! Taking over the ever popular Peppa Pig, Bluey, on ABC Kids, is a toddler celebrity. She is a six year old blue heeler who lives with her Mum, Chilli, her dad, Bandit, and her little sister Bingo. Every episode is around seven minutes and is entirely play and imagination based.

With Trixie turning two, a Bluey party was a no brainer. She’s obsessed with “Blue” and can’t get enough of the show.

Deciding how to style it was tricky as there’s no Bluey merchandise out yet. All we really have is some Etsy designs to fill out the Bluey part of it.

We decided to style the Bluey party like a garden, and focus on traditional 80’s Australian party food, with a bit of a modern twist.

Preparing the party theme

We start planning my kids party ideas at least six months out. I know that sounds excessive but there's a lot to plan! I start with a Pinterest board and pin all the party ideas on to there - then we narrow down the theme about three months out. Planning in advance also means that you can shop during different holiday seasons. For example, for my Harry Potter party I shopped the Halloween before.

Preparing the food

The best way to make sure you have everything you need is to start a list at Woolworths online where you can add every ingredient and thing you need. I start this about two weeks out then do my final check and place a click and collect order.

The food was a combination of from scratch and some hacks and purchased products.

Bluey Cookies

A Bluey party needs Bluey cookies! I'm no expert but the kids loved them. I always use this recipe from Sweetapolita to make cookies because it makes so many and it never lets me down.

To ice them I made royal icing ( 1.5 cups icing sugar per egg white, with a splash of lemon juice). If you need to thin it out a little just add water drop by drop because it thins out fast.

For the colours I used all Americolor Gels:

Bluey
Outline - Black

Dark sections - Midnight

Medium blue sections - Wedgewood (until medium blue)

Light blue sections - Wedgewood (only a little colour)

Nose and ears - Ivory

Bingo

Outline - Black

Dark sections - Pumpkin mixed with Chocolate brown

Medium sections - Pumpkin

Light sections - Ivory

Lamingtons

I wanted fun lamingtons that added colour so I made them myself. All you need is a Woolworths unfilled sponge that you chop into squares. Tip - if they don't have the rectangle ones just get the round one then trim the edges off.

To make the icing use:

4 cups icing sugar

1 tablespoon softened butter

½ cup boiling water

This made enough for me to divide into four bowls, colour each one and dip a total of 36 mini lamingtons.

Pavlovas

The pavlovas were the Woolworths meringue nests, with double cream (so you don’t need to whip it) and fruit. They take 10 minutes and everyone loved them.

Butterfly cakes

These were a Betty Crocker vanilla cupcake mix with strawberry jam and double cream.

Birthday cake

The birthday cake was a joint effort between a friend and myself. She was originally going to make it but a family emergency meant that she baked the cakes but I decorated it. She used chocolate cake that was frozen then thawed for easy decorating. It’s four layers of cake with butter cream icing and a Bluey photo transfer. You can get these from most baking stores. They are rice paper and fully edible.

I used Wilton’s Russian piping tips for the flowers and I used the same colours as I used for the cookies.

Kids party ideas - Decoration

We used natural wood rises on the party table to give it an out door garden feel, and added to that by surrounding the table with tall artificial plants. White table clothes were decided on for the tables and we made sure that the food was a different heights, which is really the key to making a party table look good.

We also printed out a number of bluey signs with different episode names and put them on associated items in the garden. As the show is imagination and play based it primarily focuses on one activity an episode. So we had ‘the pool’ on the pool fence, ‘Butterfly’ on our yoga swing, ‘taxi’ on the little tikes car, 'Trampoline' on the trampoline and so on.

We also had Kindifarm come with their little animals to provide ‘the zoo’!

Kids party ideas - Activities

As well as having our episode areas the big drawcard was having Kindifarm come along to the party. For young kids who aren't really playing together yet having Kindifarm at the party is always a winner. Trixie is obsessed with animals, especially ducks and chicks and Kindifarm definitely didn't disappoint. We chose the small animal package as we thought that was best for her age group. They arrived with two baby goats, some rabbits and guinea pigs, a duck and some baby chicks.

The kids were beside themselves! They got to cuddle the animals, walk the goats around and Trixie even got to give the goat a bottle!
