Waterproofing your items can improve their luster and extend their lifespan. Read on and watch the video to find out how to waterproof fabric using wax, commercial spray, and other common items.

1. Waterproofing sprays and seam sealers – Wash the fabric thoroughly before spraying. You can find waterproofing sprays and seam sealers at an outdoor / camping supply.

2. Laundry detergent and alum – Mix 1 pound of laundry detergent with 2 gallons of hot water in a large container then soak the fabric in the mixture until it is completely saturated. Hang the fabric to air-dry in the sun and wait until completely dry. Combine 1/2 pound of alum with 2 gallons of hot water in a second container then soak the fabric again in alum powder solution for at least 2 hours.

3. Turpentine and soybean oil – Mix 1 cup of soybean oil with 4 ounces of turpentine in a plastic container. Spread the fabric out onto a flat surface then using a paintbrush, brush the mixture onto the fabric using a long, straight, even stroke. Keep brushing the mixture onto the fabric until everything is covered. This mixture will cause your fabric to darken and will stain porous surfaces such as wood and concrete. If you are worried about this, you might want to protect your work surface with plastic first.

4. Iron-on vinyl – Purchase some iron-on vinyl from a fabric store and cut the vinyl so that it fits your fabric. Set the vinyl, sticky-side-down onto the fabric’s surface and cover with the paper backing. Make sure that the shiny side of the paper is facing down, and that the paper is covering the vinyl entirely. Lastly, run an iron over the paper.

5. Rubbing wax onto fabric – Use pure beeswax for this, without any additives because anything else may contain harmful chemicals. Rub the beeswax across the fabric in both directions and heat the item with a hairdryer for about five minutes. Set the item to cure in a warm, dry place for 24 hours. After this time, the waxed item will be ready to use.

6. Linseed oil – Apply the linseed oil onto the fabric in a thick layer. Make sure that the fabric is completely saturated with the oil. You can apply the oil with a wide bristle paintbrush or with a rag. Wait 30 minutes before wiping any oil residue off with a clean rag. Let the fabric dry for 24 hours, then repeat the process twice.
